The completion of the Pemulwuy Business Hub marks a significant milestone for the Aboriginal Housing Company, solidifying the future of the Pemulwuy Project. The sustainable revenue generated from leasing commercial, retail and childcare spaces not only support this vision, but also fosters community involvement by offering a distinctive building and public area.

The AHC andour board are very excited to announce that the “PEMULWUY PROJECT” won the 2021URBAN TASKFORCE AUSTRALIA award for urban renewal development.

An awardnight was held on 10th of November at Darling Harbour, attended by Uncle Micky,Alisi, Lani and Fouad Deiri (Managing Director of Deicorp).

After manyyears of trying to bring about the redevelopment of our land it is wonderful tobe recognised like this.

UrbanTaskforce is a non -profit organisation representing prominent propertydevelopers and equity financiers. They provide a forum for people involved inthe development and planning of urban environments to engage in constructivedialogue with the government and the community.

UrbanTaskforce’s mission is to promote:

* Qualityurban design

* Increasedeconomic activity and improved quality of life in urban communities

In the lead up to Reconciliation Week, Aboriginal Housing Company (AHC) CEO Michael Mundine and General Manager Lani Tuitavake took Karine Shellshear on a tour of the student housing, named in honour of her late husband, which has underwritten the financing of the Pemulwuy Project.

REDFERN: The“Welcome to The Block” mural on Eveleigh Street has been renewed and looks great as part of the Pemulwuy development.

Gadigal man Gary Ward – better known locally as “Gaz” – commenced his job as the Pemulwuy Project’s Building Manager in December 2020.

Our affordable housing is nearing completion –providing people with a great opportunity to live in a wonderful inner-city location.  Redfern offers you everything you need right at your doorstep – train station, schools, cafes, restaurants, shops, local services, parks, community, and easy access to the city, universities, andTAFE.

The “Pemulwuy Project” has been built to last with quality materials inside and out.  Our apartments and townhouses are generously sized with the latest designer fittings.  All have spacious living areas, top-of-the line kitchens with stainless steel ovens and dishwashers, air conditioning, stylish bathrooms, and separate laundries. Large balconies and terraces allow for a fabulous flow between indoor/outdoor life.

Our gym manager Alex Tui and Uncle Micky were onsite at the new Elouera Tony Mundine Gym last week with a photographer. Alexuploaded a number of photos on social media afterwards and was happy to reportthat there was a great buzz and excitement among former gym members when theysaw the bare bones of the new gym.

We are currently planning the fit-out. We areworking hard to make the most of our fabulous new space located next to theaffordable housing. The new gym consists of the main floor plus a mezzaninelevel with lift access. Both floors will house a boxing ring, and a sauna willbe installed on the main floor.

The gym will have a wide range of the mostup-to-date resistance and cardiovascular equipment as well as weights – withfully qualified staff on hand to help members achieve their health and fitnessgoals. Our amazing new facilities and fitness programs will cater for alllevels ensuring no one has an excuse to not to get fit and improve theiroverall health and wellbeing.

We believe the gym is a vital ingredient of thePemulwuy Project as it will be a gathering place for people to connect andspend time whilst pursuing their goals. The gym will offer first-ratefacilities and provide a welcoming, inclusive fitness environment for ourcommunity.

While the majority of the country has been working at home during theCovid-19 lockdown, the construction industry has been able to continue with afew adjustments to allow for safe environments for workers.

Great progress has been made on site during this time. If you havewalked or driven past the Pemulwuy project you will have seen the affordablehousing taking shape and the student housing growing. As originally promised,we will be delivering the affordable housing for our people first.

The development consists of:

Precinct 1 – Affordablehousing for 62 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, along with agym, and gallery.

Precinct 2 – Commercialand retail space, and childcare.

Precinct 3 – TheCol James student accommodation.

Housing update: Thestructure of the apartments including the roof and metal framing is complete.All the outside walls have been rendered and painting of feature walls hasstarted.

From level 1 to 5 internal workis being completed. From level 1 to 3 painting of ceilings and walls is alreadyfinished along with the tiling. The kitchens are ready to go in.

External brickwork is commencingon the townhouses. The gym is ready to have its windows installed then willmove onto the flooring and painting ready for fit-out.

Student housing update: TheCol James student accommodation has reached Level 12. Framing has beencompleted up to level 8 and air conditioning and bathrooms are now beinginstalled. Substation transformers have been delivered ready for installation.

Precinct 2: Siteestablishment commenced in May.

Construction commenced on the Aboriginal Housing Company’s (AHC)Pemulwuy Project in March. The AHC team was excited to see two large cranes erected on site in July. The workers put the cranes together like a giant meccano set, and carefully manoeuvred the pieces into place.

In recognition of NAIDOC, the Aboriginal and the Torres Strait Islander flags were raised high on the top of the crane structures. NAIDOC 2019’s theme was “Voice. Treaty. Truth”, which truly reflected the AHC’s long-term vision for the Pemulwuy Project.

Work on the site has progressed well. The first and second concrete-slabs are down for the apartments, gym and gallery. The formwork for the gallery has commenced and excavation of the site is 95 per-cent complete.

The Pemulwuy Project consists of:

·      Precinct 1: Affordable housing for 62 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, which is being built first, along with a gym and gallery.

·      Precinct 2: Commercial and retail space, and a childcare centre.

·      Precinct 3: Student accommodation, which will be known as the Col James Student Accommodation.

From humble beginnings…the Aboriginal Housing Company is turning 46today!

The Aboriginal Housing Company was founded due to the lack of appropriate and affordable housing for Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander people.

The very first board meeting was held at the registered office at 57 Louis Street, Redfern on 25 July, 1973, the same day as the AHC’s Certificate of Incorporation of Public Company was issued by theCorporate Affairs Commission.

Redfern was the birthplace of the urban Aboriginal civil rights movement, and this saw the establishment of significant Aboriginal controlled organisations, including the AHC, along with the Aboriginal MedicalService (AMS), legal and childcare services

Now in 2019, construction on the “Pemulwuy Project”site is well underway.

Today we were also very excited and happy to see the installation of a large crane on Precinct 1!

The workers started early this morning and this afternoon the last piece of the crane was carefully manoeuvred into place. It was a great feeling after so many years of hard work to make the “Pemulwuy Project” become a reality.

In recognition of NAIDOC, the Aboriginal and theTorres Strait Islander flags are flying high on the top of the crane structure.NAIDOC 2019’s theme is voice, treaty, truth which truly reflects the AHC’s longterm vision for the “Pemulwuy Project”.

Affordable housing for 62 Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander families are being built first on Precinct 1, followed by a gym, childcare and gallery. Precinct 2 will feature commercial and retail space, andPrecinct 3 will feature student accommodation.

We are also celebrating another milestone – Uncle Micky’s 44 years at the AHC!

Uncle Micky has strived to create a sustainable, safe environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait people, and the surrounding community.

Uncle Micky’s tenacious drive and passion, has finally led to his wish for his people being fulfilled with the commencement of the“Pemulwuy Project” on the AHC’s land. We can’t speak about Uncle Micky, without saying “his moogleness” has contributed to the wonderful outcome we have today!

With Uncle Micky at the helm, the AHC is self-funded, independent, Aboriginal-controlled, and we are the developers for the “Pemulwuy Project”.  Today we recognise his faith, resilience and his thinking“outside-the-box”, and that with this anything can be achieved.  Uncle Micky has never lost sight that it is all about building a bright future for the next generation.

Construction Commences atPemulwuy, Redfern

Sydney 26 March 2019: Today we wereproud and honoured to hold our ‘Turning of the Soil’ Ceremony for the PemulwuyProject, Redfern, to signify the commencement of construction on the land,formerly known as “The Block”.

 Located betweenLouis Street and the Railway Corridor opposite Redfern train station, thePemulwuy Project will see the redevelopment of the land into three precincts.

As originallyplanned many years ago, we will be building affordable housing for 62Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, a gym, childcare, studentaccommodation, a gallery, and commercial and retail spaces.  We are veryexcited to announce that construction work will commence with Precinct 1 thisweek, which includes the 62 dwellings for affordable housing.

Through the PemulwuyProject we are creating history fulfilling our desire for a sustainable, socialurban development.  Our aim is to bring the community together byembracing a cultural living experience, which will ensure a strong and vibrantfuture for generations to come.

This has been a longjourney and we look forward to a new chapter in Redfern through the PemulwuyProject, Redfern. The Aboriginal Housing Company (AHC) would like to thankeveryone that was involved in making today a reality.
